Reader!

Let’s try an SAT question today, straight from the SAT question bank:

How confident are you in your answer?

Here is some help with the words. Use these at dinner today!

Protracted – lasting for a long time, often longer than expected.
The protracted rainstorm kept us indoors for nearly a week.

Superseded – replaced by something newer, bigger, or better.
The old phones were quickly superseded by smartphones.

Curtailed – reduced or cut short.
The field trip was curtailed because the bus broke down.

Obviated – made unnecessary; prevented by a solution.
Using GPS obviated the need for printed maps.

Even with an understanding of these words, this question is still tough, right?!

Enter one of my favorite SAT strategies: the simple summary!

When I am taking an SAT, and I find myself in a question like this - a question where the passage is full of complex scientific jargon - I lean away from the noise. Instead of diving deeper into the reading, and trying to understand every word of it, I simplify!

For the above passage, here is my simple summary: “Something contains and accumulates lots of DNA. It is a type of fern. There is a “cost” of having a lot of DNA, so the large genome of this fern is unlikely to be _________.”

See it now? The answer is B, superseded.

What do you think of the strategy? Reach out and let me know!

Kate
